One of the most adventurous yet convenient way to discover a new place is to go driving. All you need is to be a legitimate driver, i.e. one with a legitimate driving licence from your own country, and to have a generally good sense of direction.
And of course before you venture into the unknown, make sure you have a good road map, a good car, a good co-pilot and of course a good knowledge that the roads you are going to drive on are actually drivable.
If you were to travel in New Zealand, you would have no problems with driving on good roads. New Zealand's tourist routes are of a generally high standard and the main roads are sealed. All roads, including those in rural locations, are signposted. It is a great country for driving. Traffic is generally light, roads are well-maintained and the passing scenery makes every kilometre worthwhile.
For places to stay, you can always check out reasonably-priced accommodations in the cities that you are planning to visit on your road trip. Cities such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are just some of the magnificent places that you'd have to include in your list. There are many hotels in New Zealand which offer last minute and year round discount on all types of accommodation throughout the country. You will not have problems getting hotels in Auckland, hotels in Wellington or even in Christchurch at any time you arrive at these destinations.
Make your road trip in New Zealand a memorable one by making sure you have a good camera with you, plus your best buddies to share your adventures with.
